Origin

Amakusa Shirō was a leader of the Shimabara Rebellion. Shirō was born in modern-day Kami-Amakusa, Kumamoto and touted by the leaders of the Shimabara Uprising as the "Fourth Son of Heaven," foretold by Saint Francis Xavier to be destined to lead the Christianization of Japan. Shirō led the defense of Hara Castle and died when it fell.

His death poem was: "Now, those who accompany me in being besieged in this castle, will be my friends until the next world."
