Otaro is not a samurai, because he can not even fulfill the meaning of the word which is "to serve". His skill in the way of bushido is irrelavant. He and the other 47 samurai were failures if they could let their master's reputation slip so, as well as fail to protect him, but Otaro Masushita is a coward, simply for judging his own life more important than his master's.
