The greatest responsibility of the Shindaan is to guard the Hall of Gates in the central hub of Phyrra. The elite few chosen for this task are known as Gatekeepers, and to wear the title is both a great honor and a great responsibility. While the Shindaan are recruited from the ranks of the greatest Arena fighters, the Gatekeepers are hand-picked by the Archons from the very best of the Shindaan after proving themselves worthy both in the Arena and out. Individual Archons have their own requirements and guidelines for picking Gatekeepers, but the tests are rumoured to be murderously difficult. The city of Phyrra holds the Gatekeepers in exceptionally high regard - they are virtually above the law. While the great majority of Gatekeepers are honorable and extremely sworn to their duty, there have been several documented cases of Gatekeepers spontaneously lashing out and killing without repercussion, leading some to speculate that the Phyrran ruling councils have granted the Gatekeepers complete freedom in determining how best to perform their jobs. The fear instilled by the thought of a Gatekeeper "flipping out" and cutting off one's head tends to outweigh most peoples' sense of curiosity, and as such people tend to avoid the Phyrran Gatekeepers, leaving their inner workings shrouded in complete mystery.
