"Lost in the razor desert of Karth, I believed death to be eminent. In my accidental journey through the Shadowlands, I had avoided grisly death and worse in the face of many grotesque trials, yet simple thirst would prove to be my undoing. As I lay beneath the toxic green moon, a thousand tiny glass daggers working their way slowly into my back, I closed my eyes and prayed to slip into Lady Death's cold, maternal embrace. But the Shadowlands are never so kind. I coaxed back to the land of the living by a wet and ominous sound. A great larval beast (I will call it a Cringe Grub, in honor of my first reaction to its pale, shivering mass) had attached itself to my calf. It seemed to have brought me back to life by injecting me with a vile, hydrating fluid, so that it could keep my warm, living blood flowing. Though the creature was easily dispatched, its very skeleton had fused to my own, leaving me with a permanent bony boot."
