While it is true that the 47 Ronin are legends in old Japan, few know of the 48th Ronin. When the other 47 samurai set out to avenge their wronged master, Otaro declined to join them. Our master, he told them, wasn't all that good. In fact he was a cheap, ill-tempered drunk who used us like so much cattle. Frankly he got what he deserved. So Otaro became an exile from his own clan. His brother samurai went off and avenged their master and entered immortal fame through their mass seppuku. Otaro bcame the most despised man in Japan and had to endure both scorn and endless duels. He finally went off into the mountains and was never heard of again... until he showed up in Phyrra--mean, lean, and driven with hate.
