Origin
Sanosuke was formerly of the Sekihoutai, a group of armed peasants which persuaded others to side with the new government. Near the end of the revolution, imperialists labeled them as a false army spreading lies around about tax cuts, and were executed. Sanosuke was believed to be the last of the Sekihoutai to exist.

Since then Sanosuke lived his life as a fighter for hire. He branded the symbol "Wicked" on his back as a reminder of his allegiance with the Sekihoutai.
